As a dietary supplement, choline, formerly known as vitamin B11, occurs naturally in meat, egg yolks, spinach, cabbage and nuts. It is partly absorbed through food and partly produced in the liver and other tissue from various essential substances. Choline helps ensure the proper metabolism of homocysteine and lipids (fats). It helps maintain normal liver activity and the proper functioning of the kidneys. Choline should not be used as a normal dietary supplement when treating depression or other serious psychiatric illnesses. The recommended daily dosage that makes the properties mentioned possible is 82.5 mg according to EU regulation.
